A woman used a sword to fight back against a man she said broke into her home and tried to rape her.

Diana Olson said she woke up in her home on Southeast Taggart Street early Thursday morning to find a man unbuttoning her pants.

“I just started screaming and he held me down with one hand and was hitting me in the head with the other,” said Olson. “He just kept telling me to quit talking and quit yelling.”

Olson said she managed to get the man off her and the two struggled in the hallway, where Olson grabbed a sward off the wall.

According to Olson, she swung the sword at the man as hard as she could, hitting him in the head or the arm.

Olson said the man fled from the house and she called 911. She was taken to the hospital, where employees called her husband, Arthur.

“They said that there was a home invasion and that your wife was beat up,” said Arthur Olson.

Arthur, who was out of town on business, rushed back to be with his wife.

“The sword was laying in the entryway still and I could see where she gouged the closet an eighth of an inch deep by swinging,” said Arthur.

Police took samples of blood found at the house, which they said could be from the attacker.

Anyone with information one the case is urged to contact Portland police.
