At least four people died and dozens of others were injured when the Interstate 35W bridge in Minneapolis collapsed into the Mississippi River during rush hour Wednesday night. The Portland Fire Department’s Urban Search and Rescue team held a demonstration Wednesday night and showed some of the equipment and discussed their preparedness if something similar should happen in Portland.“Everybody would be wanting to help, but it's those first initial minutes and hours is where people live and die and you need to have the resources there with the expertise to get in safely cause you don’t want more victims,” said Lt. Allen Oswalt “That's what you need to be prepared for.”Firefighters said they have a toolbox of equipment to handle a variety of disasters from earthquakes to building and bridge collapses. There is also a plan in place to borrow equipment they don’t have locally.
