FOX 12 Takes A Look At PSU Campus Crime

This week, FOX 12 is comparing Oregon universities to see how they stack up when it comes to campus crime rates.

FOX 12 took a look at how students at Portland State University work to keep themselves safe.

According to the most recent figures from 2005, four people were robbed, 16 cars were stolen, 56 burglaries were reported, two people were sexually assaulted and 59 people were arrested on suspicion of drug possession charges.

Students said theft is a major concern and they believe campuses are targeted because students have an affinity for high-tech toys.

“A lot of people bring laptops and they leave them to get a slice of pizza or go to the bathroom and they’re gone when they come back,” said student Ashley D’Agostino.

Still, many students said they feel extremely safe at Oregon’s largest university.

Public Safety officers recommend that students travel in pairs, especially at night. If a student is alone, the school will provide a safe escort.

There are several blue light phones scattered throughout the campus which connect directly to the Public Safety office and officers do regular patrols 24 hours a day.
