A wedding officiant stole gift cards from a Portland couple after they hired her to perform their wedding, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

Police said Shey Silveira, 27, stole the gift cards and used some of them at a Home Depot in Sherwood.

She had been contacted through Craigslist by Shawn and Kyra Sonnenschein, who were searching for someone to conduct their Sept. 16 wedding ceremony.

The couple asked for gift cards instead of gifts because they were remodeling their home, but they received only a handful of gift cards from nearly 100 guests who attended their wedding, according to police.

Officers said the couple didn't want to doubt the generosity of their guests, but after several friends asked them what they were going to do with their gift cards, they realized the cards had been stolen.

A Portland police detective eventually tracked the cards to the Home Depot, where surveillance video showed Silveira as a suspect, according to authorities.

Silveira was arrested on one count of second-degree theft.

More charges are expected, police said.
