Salem police searched a neighborhood near Highland Elementary School for a burglar Tuesday.

Police said they received a 911 call from a neighbor shortly before 8 a.m. about a suspicious man in the area of Highland Avenue Northeast.

When police confronted a man carrying several items, which police said they believe were taken from a nearby home, the man fled.

Officers searched the area around Maple Avenue Northeast and Academy Street.

School officials were notified about the police activity, but there was no lockdown ordered for the school.

As a precuation, police asked parents to accompany their children if they walked to Highland Elementary School.
