GRESHAM, Ore. -- A 15-year-old boy is in custody in connection with the baseball bat beating of a 71-year-old man.

The man, later identified as Laurie Chilcote, was transported to Oregon Health & Science University with extensive head injuries, according to police.

The teen was taken into custody near Division Street and Hood Avenue after a search of the surrounding areas with a K-9 unit.

The teen was charged on suspicion of assault, attempted murder and criminal mischief.

A grand jury will hear the case on Nov. 9.

The case remains under investigation.
