Man Shot Dead In SE Portland, Police Say

UPDATED: 6:56 am PST November 8, 2007

A man was shot to death while he was behind the wheel of a car in southeast Portland on Wednesday.

Police said John Stewart, 31, had been shot and a passenger called 911, leading officers to respond to the 10100 block of Southeast Division Street just before 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Stewart was pronounced dead at the scene, officers said. An autopsy determined Stewart died of a gunshot wound to his torso.

Detectives said they believe another car pulled up alongside Stewart's Chrysler Sebring and fired at least seven shots at him.

The two passengers in Stewart's car were not injured. Police said they were being questioned and were cooperating fully with authorities.

“They took away a father of four,” said Stewart’s mom, Lori Towne. “And we can’t bring him back.”

“He was a good person and a great father,” said Stewart’s ex-wife, Deanna Stewart.

Division Street from Interstate 205 to 101st Avenue was closed for six hours while detectives investigated the shooting.

Police said the shooting wasn't a random act, but they have released no information about a motive or suspects.

Anyone who may have information about the shooting is asked to call 503-823-4003, 503-823-0449 or 503-823-0255.
