Former Teacher Sentenced To Probation, Community Service

A former Hillsboro teacher was sentenced to 18 months probation and 150 hours of community service for trying to sell a student’s coat on eBay.

A jury found Elizabeth Logan, a former Jackson Elementary School teacher, guilty of attempted theft, third-degree theft and computer crime earlier this month.

Logan resigned in May after allegations surfaced that she stole a first-grade student's coat and tried to sell it on eBay.

The student's mother said she was outraged when she found her child's coat on the online auction site.

Early in the trial, Logan said it was common for people to take home unclaimed coats; otherwise, the school janitor would throw them away.

She said she took a coat similar to the one in question, but it was months before the student reported the coat missing. Logan didn't think it was the same coat.

Logan, as part of the sentencing, is not allowed to contact the victim, the victim’s family or Jackson Elementary School during her probation. She is also prohibited from using eBay or any other computer-based trading site.

Judge Marco Hernandez said it wouldn't benefit the community for Logan to serve jail time, leading him to hand down the sentence of 150 hours of community service. The judge also will let Logan's probation officer decide if she needs a mental health evaluation.

Logan made no comments during the sentencing or after her court appearance.

Her attorney, Shannon Connall, said she plans to make a motion for a new trial. She said one of the jurors sent her an e-mail contesting how the jury ended up deciding to convict Logan on all counts.

Connall also said there was obvious confusion over the jury instructions and that the jury ignored some of those instructions.
