Police: Man Used Craigslist To Sell Cars With Altered Odometers

UPDATED: 9:09 pm PST November 23, 2007

A Gresham man has been arrested after allegations he sold a car with a false odometer reading.

Ricky Ephrem, 26, was arrested last week on charges of theft, forgery, identity theft and submitting false disclosures.

Ephrem allegedly used Craigslist to sell a car to a buyer from Washington. The buyer later learned the car he purchased had a false odometer reading and had nearly 100,000 more miles on it than the odometer actually showed.

A state trooper later contacted Ephrem based on another Craigslist listing, and found he was trying to sell another car with a false odometer reading, according to police.

Police believe Ephrem also used classified ads in The Oregonian to advertise his vehicles for sale.

Authorities said Ephrem has used at least three aliases in the past: Michael Shaun Stevens, Ronald Johnson and John Ricky Steve.

State police investigators also said Ephrem may have sold other cars that had altered or replaced odometers.

Anyone with information on a similar vehicle purchase is asked to call police at 503-731-3020, ext. 411.
