Sister Speaks Out About Sex Offender Operating Bike Shop

UPDATED: 11:02 am PST November 26, 2007

There are new developments in the controversy surrounding a convicted child molester running a small business.

Harry Garrett, 54, is running a bike shop on Main Street in Oregon City. He has applied for a business license in the city and will operate the shop while the license is under consideration, according to police.

Convicted of sex abuse and sodomy in 2000, Garrett's crimes involved male and female children between 9 and 15 years old.

Garrett’s sister, Debbie Hurst, said he abused their children and she wants neighbors to know who they’re dealing with.

“Who wants to be the one to use their child as a sample to find out if he’s changed? God bless his heart if he has, but who is willing to put their child out there to find out?” said Hurst.

In a phone interview with FOX 12 news partner Newsradio 750 KXL, Garrett said he opened a repair shop so he would not attract children.

He served his time and said he feels the officers' door-to-door notification is unfair.

"I have a right, as does anybody else, to make a living in their life," Garrett told KXL.

Hurst said will learn whether he’ll get a permanent business license on Monday.
