CLATSKANIE, Ore. -- Flowing debris spilled onto U.S. Highway 30 and washed away homes near Clatskanie on Tuesday.
The slide buried a stretch of Highway 30, also known as Lower Columbia River Highway, with mud and debris at about noon.Oregon Department of Forestry officials said last week's storms caused a build-up of mud, trees and other debris in the area. The flowing debris from the Eilertsen Creek was eventually stopped by an abandoned railroad grade. But the debris broke through the grade and slid onto the highway Tuesday.Nearby homes had previously been evacuated by the Columbia County Sheriff's Office. There were no injuries reported. One woman living above the slide was stranded in her home, where the driveway was wiped out by the mud. But officials said she is in no danger.Earlier in the day, forestry officials requested that the Oregon Department of Transportation close the highway because of the potential for a slide in the area of Eilertsen Creek. The highway is closed until further notice. ODOT recommended people driving to and from Astoria use state Route 4 to 401 in Washington or U.S. 26 (Sunset Highway) to U.S. 101 in Oregon.Last week, storms brought winds of more than 125 mph to parts of the Oregon Coast and more than 10 inches of rain to other areas. It led the government to declare a federal disaster for 11 counties in Oregon and Washington, including Clatskanie's Columbia County.Images: Slide Closes U.S. 30 Both Directions
