As TriMet moves forward with plans to make MAX trains safer, a Beaverton man is warning riders to be extra careful after he was attacked on a train on Monday night.

Chanto Lange told FOX 12 he was riding a westbound train toward Beaverton Monday night when two teenagers started making fun of a disabled passenger.

Lange said he confronted the two teenagers and the pair started hitting him and shoved him into a pole. Lange suffered two black eyes and received six stitches in his nose.

Beaverton police later arrested 19-year-old Darren Gonzales in connection with the attack.

Lange said MAX’s new safety plan, which includes placing more officers on westside trains by the end of the month, will only do so much.

“Everybody is on shifts. They’re not going to be on there 24-7,” said Lange.

TriMet’s new safety plan is expected to cost more than $5 million a year.
