PORTLAND, Ore. -- Deputies and transportation officials cracked down on unlicensed and uninsured movers Friday. The sting, set up by the Oregon Department of Transportation and Clackamas County deputies, focused on movers who were advertising on the Web site Craigslist.Legal and licensed movers told ODOT, which licenses the trucks and drivers, that the unregistered companies were taking business away. Deputies said the ODOT officials came to them for enforcement help after the legitimate moving companies' complaints.Thursday’s sting resulted in 43 citations for unsafe trucks and unsafe drivers.Deputies said they found drug paraphernalia in one truck. They also arrested Paul Punley and Clifford Trachsel on charges they violated their parole. The two were out of prison for robbery and assault, but they had illegal knives on them Thursday.Neighbors said they applaud the state for making it an issue.“I think it’s a good idea,” said Lou Ella Weaver. “It was a little bit scary this morning watching all this going on."ODOT has a consumer guide for moving.
