The 1994 figure skating scandal involving Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan may have seemed like the classic soap opera.

And now the saga has taken the stage in Portland.

"Tonya and Nancy: The Rock Opera" premiered Thursday night in downtown Portland.

Harding showed up to watch the premiere. She appeared nervous and said she hadn’t seen the script yet.

"I’ve heard about it, but I haven’t read it," Harding said. "I know everybody’s going to play it just great."

The rock opera is patterned after a shorter chamber opera that was performed in Boston two years ago.

It chronicles the events leading up to the 1994 U.S. Skating Championships, when people associated with Harding attacked Kerrigan.

Harding’s ex-husband Jeff Gillooly and her bodyguard Shawn Eckhardt hired a man to strike Kerrigan on the knee, forcing her to withdraw from the competition.

During the lengthy scandal, Kerrigan went on to win the silver medal at the Olympics, while Harding took eighth.

"Tonya and Nancy: The Rock Opera" runs through March 8 at the World Trade Center in Portland.

Harding said the opera is "helping the local talent get some publicity and they can get more work on themselves."
