A Spokane man made history by being the first person to basejump off Mount Hood on Thursday.

Matthias Giraud ski-base jumped 253 feet off the Mississippi Headwall, which is located on the south face of the mountain.

“You know that feeling you get on a roller coaster and your heart goes in your throat? It’s like that constantly,” Giraud said. “You just fall and the ground is coming straight at you. You pull and you hear a big ra-boom – it’s the happiest feeling in the world.”

Giraud said he’s been scoping out Mount Hood and was just waiting for the right weather.

It was the pro skier’s first time base jumping on skis. He said it was smooth sailing and is already making plans for his next trip.

Base jumping is an extreme sport in which people jump from a platform and use a parachute to descend. It’s against the law unless you have a permit.
