Keepsakes belonging to a hospitalized 13-year-old girl were stolen during a car break-in at Portland’s Legacy Emanuel Hospital on Thursday.

The girl and her mother, Melissa Peck, were taken to Legacy Emanuel Hospital by Life Flight a week ago. Doug Peck, the girl’s father, then drove to Portland from Coos Bay on Thursday to bring them much-needed clothes and supplies.

Peck said he loaded everything he could think his wife and daughter would need for a long stay at the hospital.

But on Thursday night, thieves broke into the sport utility vehicle and took clothes, shoes, coats, a camera and the girl’s scrapbooking materials.

The Pecks said the clothing and camera aren’t as important as the girl’s scrap booking materials, which were collected over the course of several years.

“To have those types of precious things taken, just adds to the whole compounding stress of having a daughter in the children’s hospital,” Melissa Peck said.

The Pecks discovered the broken windows Friday afternoon when they hoped to get away for a small break. Instead, they spent that break filing a police report.

They said it's unthinkable that thieves would steal from a car parked at a hospital.

“Not only is she fighting to get better, but she has to deal with a loss that she wasn’t anticipating,” Peck said.

The Peck family said the theft cost them thousands of dollars, between the stolen items and the damage to the SUV.

They’re hoping someone saw something that will help track down the thieves or at least their large, black duffel bag and black scrap-booking bag.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.

An account has been set up in the family's name. Donations can be made to the "Peck Family Fund" at any Key Bank.
