TOLEDO, Ore. -- The foster parents of Gabriel Allred said Wednesday the boy’s adoption appears to be in limbo.Gabriel is a 2-year-old boy born in Oregon who holds a dual U.S.-Mexican citizenship. Last year, he was at the heart of a custody battle between his biological family in Mexico and his foster family in Oregon. An agreement was eventually reached between Gabriel’s paternal grandmother and his Oregon foster parents that allowed him to stay in Oregon.Steve Brandt, Gabriel’s foster father, told Newsradio 750 KXL’s Lars Larson that they were told the adoption could happen as early as Christmas, but it’s been months and the process hasn’t been completed. The family is under a gag order, but Brandt did express his frustration on Larson's radio show Wednesday.“It’s just crazy,” Brandt said. “It should not take this long for Gabriel’s sake or our sake. I almost feel like they’re stringing us along.”Brandt also said he and his wife were sent a letter from Department of Human Services that said they were no longer allowed to be foster parents. He said their lawyer is still trying to get some answers from the state.
