LONGVIEW, Wash. -- A Longview math teacher and soccer coach has been arrested on charges he had sex with a 15-year-old student.

Joe Starkey, who teaches math at R.A. Long High School and is an assistant soccer coach, allowed a 15-year-old runaway to stay at his apartment, according to court records.

Police found the runaway, who is a math student of Starkey’s, at his Longview apartment over the weekend, investigators said.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Starkey admitted to police that he had sex with the 15-year-old girl.

She’d been staying there for about three days, according to records.

Most students at R.A. Long High School say Starkey was a great teacher and coach and they are surprised he would be charged with having sex with a minor.

“He was really cool. You could talk to him about a lot of stuff. During practice he would help you with math and stuff if you needed it,” R.A. Long High School student Alysha said. “I don’t know why he’d do that. It’s crazy. I mean, he’s smarter than that.”

Another man is also accused of having a sexual relationship with the teen, according to the documents.

Police also arrested 38-year-old Dennis Baker who the teenager claims sexually abused her for 18 months, according to court documents.

Baker denies the allegations.

Both men were in court Monday.

Starkey has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
