Many Items Still Missing After Craigslist Hoax

Hoax ads on Craigslist.org led to a massive property loss for a southern Oregon man, and he's still missing many of his items.

Deputies said someone posted an ad claiming Robert Salisbury moved away and hundreds of his items were being given away for free.

Within an hour, people were flocking to the property.

Salisbury had been fixing up the property and preparing to rent it out. But the Internet posting said his family had moved out of the country and left all of their stuff behind.

Hundreds of items were taken, including baby supplies, tools, furniture and appliances. Someone took a horse from the property, but it was returned.

The owner returned home Saturday to find dozens of people rummaging through his stuff and refusing to leave.

A neighbor said he was suspicious from the start.

“I was in the kitchen and I noticed a whole bunch of cars going up the easement, up and down,” said Tony Johnson, a neighbor to the victim.

Several items have been brought back to the property, but police said there are many more items unaccounted for.

Investigators said they may charge people who fail to return the items, even though it all stemmed from a misleading ad.
