A child died after falling in the Tualatin River at Steamboat Park on Tuesday afternoon.

Teen Rodolfo Ferreira said he heard screaming and ran outside to find a girl looking for help at the Cornelius park.

“She ran back and forth and asked me if I knew how to swim,” Ferreira said. “I said no, but she told me the kid drowned.”

Ferreira said he jumped in the river, but the 4-year-old boy was facedown and not moving.

“He looked like he was dead,” Ferreira said. “I pulled him out, gave him to my mom and that’s when the police got here.”

Police responding to the incident gave the boy CPR and he was then taken to a hospital by a LifeFlight helicopter.

The boy was pronounced dead at Legacy Emanuel Hospital.

Ferreira said he was proud that he was close by and able to help, but he is saddened that it wasn’t enough.

“I wish I could think that this didn’t even happen, because it’s hard for me to see a little kid like that,” he said.

Police said there doesn’t appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death but they are still investigating.
