Greek Cusina In Battle Over Liquor License

For decades, customers have dined on authentic fare at Portland’s landmark Greek Cusina.

But recent customers have likely never known that their host is facing a battle with the Oregon Liquor Control Commission.

OLCC leaders have recommended that the Greek Cusina’s liquor license be pulled. They said the restaurant owner, Ted Papas, doesn’t cooperate with them or police and continues to have problems with fighting, noise and public drunkenness.

“I have been in business for 30 years and the accusations the OLCC has brought about, we feel we can defend every single one of them,” Papas said.

The complaints relate to the after-hours scene when the second floor of the restaurant becomes a nightclub.

Neighboring bartender Josh Mabry has seen some problems, but he said it comes with the territory.

“It’s kind of the same with any other college-type rowdy bar,” he said. “It brings that crowd, that dynamic.”

Regulars have said they would hate to see the Greek Cusina close down. But after three decades, Ted Papas isn’t worried.

“I don’t think I’d be in business as long as I have if my managing staff wasn’t trained properly and if I didn’t keep my customers safe,” Papas said.

Papas said he plans to defend himself at an administrative OLCC hearing.
