Weather Extends Snow Tire Season

UPDATED: 6:39 pm PDT March 27, 2008

The Oregon Department of Transportation decided to continue the studded tire season through April 5 after a streak of winter weather.

The season was set to end on April 1; but with the snow falling and the National Weather Service predicting the temperatures statewide won’t start to rise until late this coming weekend, ODOT decided that wasn’t enough time for motorists traveling this weekend to remove their studded tires by the deadline.

ODOT isn’t planning to extend the studded tire season past April 5 so motorists should plan to remove their studded tires by then.

Motorists who aren’t traveling through the mountains this next week may want to remove their studded tires early to avoid the rush.

Drivers with studded tires on their vehicles in Oregon after April 5 can be charged with a Class C traffic violation, which carries a maximum $145 fine.

The Washington State Department of Transportation has made the same decision.
