THE DALLES, Ore. -- The engine room of a 230-foot cruise ship caught fire on the Columbia River overnight. The fire was reported on the Majestic Cruise Line Queen of the West at around 12:30 a.m. Crews evacuated the ship hours later in Maryhill, Wash.
There were 124 passengers and 53 crew members on board. No serious injuries were reported, but three crew members suffered smoke inhalation.
The fire started while the ship was east of The Dalles at mile 210 of the Columbia River.Crews contained the engine room fire and assessed the situation to make sure it didn't catch fire again. The Queen of the West lost power during the incident, but a tug helped it maneuver along the river until it beached at Maryhill State Park.Passengers disembarked and then loaded into buses to head to Skamania Lodge in Stevenson, Wash. The Washington Department of Ecology is assessing the risk of any oil pollution from the disabled ship.In a statement Tuesday morning, a Majestic America Line representative said the Queen of the West is being inspected to assess the extent of the damage to the engine room. When the inspection is complete, repairs will take place at Sundial Marine Construction in Troutdale.
