A large boulder struck and killed a boy playing near a rock quarry in Bend on Tuesday.

Five-year-old Gabriel Brisbine, of Sisters, died at St. Charles Medical Center, where he was taken by family.

Deschutes County deputies said Gabriel and his 10-year-old brother were trying to climb down a slope consisting of boulders, rocks and cinders. During the descent, Gabriel fell a short distance. He was then hit by the boulder, deputies said.

The boy's family was conducting business in the area while the children played on the rocks.

Sheriff's deputies described the death as a "tragic accident," but the district attorney's office is conducting a review.
