TUALATIN, Ore. -- A contractor working at a dry cleaner was recovering after he was exposed to some potentially dangerous chemicals. The worker at Alpine Dry Cleaners on Southwest Farmington Road in Aloha was sprayed in the face and chest during an accident Friday.Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue crews evacuated four other businesses in the same complex because they weren’t sure what chemicals were involved or the extent of the spill.Firefighters and paramedics evaluated the patient and performed decontamination on him.
The Hazardous Materials Team determined the chemical to be Tetrachloroethylene, which is a manufactured chemical that is widely used for dry cleaning of fabrics and for metal-degreasing.According to the Department of Health and Human Services, "tetrachloroethylene is a nonflammable liquid at room temperature which evaporates easily into the air and has a sharp, sweet odor."It is an irritant to the eyes, nose, mouth and the respiratory system. High concentrations of the chemical can cause dizziness, headache, sleepiness, confusion, nausea, difficulty speaking and walking, unconsciousness and death. The injured man went to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries but officials said he's going to be OK.The surrounding businesses were reopened after crews determined there was no contamination, but a laundry business next door to the dry cleaners later closed due to overwhelming odors. Both the laundry and dry cleaners will remain closed until a chemical cleanup company can respond, firefighters said.
