Sailing Vessel Runs Aground, Spilling Gasoline

The U.S. Coast Guard said that a 40-50 foot sailing vessel ran aground Saturday at about 8 p.m., causing a fuel spill near the St. John's Bridge.

There were no injuries reported, officials said, as the boat crashed into a dam and started taking on water.

The driver said he headed to shore to avoid sinking and ran aground.

The Coast Guard said it is working to contain the fuel spill, which it said is less than 25 gallons and is floating downstream.

Because the amount of fuel is less than 25 gallons, officials said it won't be an environmental hazard.
