A man shot his way into a Vancouver credit union and robbed it Tuesday morning.

Witnesses said a man showed up at the door of Northwest Navigation Federal Credit Union and found it locked. He fired two shots through the glass, opened the door and confronted three employees inside, police said.

No one was injured during the robbery.

The robber threatened the credit union manager with a gun and ordered her to get money out for him, police said. He then took the cash and ran off.

Police responded to a call at 9:13 a.m. and set up a perimeter to search for the robber, but he wasn't found.

Judy Saleg took a call from her daughter-in-law inside the Northwest Navigation Credit Union, soon after Vancouver police rushed to the scene.

“Shots were fired, she was in there. She was robbed,” Saleg said. “She's pretty hysterical.”

Saleg finally got to take her daughter-in-law home, but the younger woman was still trembling, and said only “he shot at me.” Her mother-in-law summarized their day as “scary, scary.”

At least four nearby schools entered lockdown mode and several streets were closed off because of the search.

Brett Payne, who works next door to the credit union, said he thought the man headed south, from West Fourth Plain and Kauffman. Police responded in force, and searched that area.

“I heard some gunshots, and I heard a car pull out,” Payne said.

The robber is described as skinny and about 5 feet 8 inches tall. He wore a dark blue skimask, dark pants, leather gloves and a black hooded sweatshirt during the robbery. He was armed with a small, black handgun.

The robbery happened around 9 a.m. The credit union is located at 815 W. Fourth Plain Blvd.

It was the second credit union to be robbed in Vancouver in the past two days. A man robbed the People's Community Credit Union on Southeast 12th Court on Monday afternoon.

However, police said the description of Tuesday's credit union gunman and his method didn't appear to fit several recent robberies.

“They'll be reliving it for a long time. I'm just glad they're OK,” said Candace Nolan Fine, who said she used to work at the credit union and had been robbed there herself.
