UPDATED: 9:27 pm PDT May 1, 2008

A man threw a lit cigarette from his car window, which led to a standoff that ended with his arrest, police said.

Adam Staten, 25, threw a lit cigarette out of the 1999 Jeep Cherokee he was driving on Northeast Plain Boulevard in Vancouver at about 12:30 p.m., police said.

A Washington State Patrol trooper said he tried to stop the Jeep, but Staten continued driving, turning down side streets to lose the trooper.

The trooper said he momentarily lost sight of the vehicle and then located it at the address listed on the vehicle registration.

Staten ran into the house along with a woman and a child that had been in the front yard, police said.

Troopers secured the area around the house along with Clark County sheriff's deputies, and after trying several times to get Staten to come out of the house, the SWAT team was called in, police said.

After about an hour and a half, Staten came out of the house and surrendered, police said.

He was booked into Clark County Jail for outstanding felony and misdemeanor warrants, eluding arrest, resisting arrest and driving with a suspended license.

Staten was also issued a citation for throwing the lit cigarette out the window, which has a $1,025 fine, police said.

Neither the woman nor the child was hurt during the standoff.
