Driver Dies After Hitting School Bus Head-On

SCAPPOOSE, Ore. -- One person died and four were injured Wednesday afternoon in a crash between a school bus and a car on Highway 30, police said.Garland Spooner, 45, from Scappoose, was driving about 35 students from Warren Elementary School southbound on Highway 30 in the righthand lane when a northbound 2008 Honda Civic crossed the center median hitting the bus head-on, witnesses told police.
After the accident the Honda stopped on the southbound shoulder while the school bus came to rest across both northbound lanes.
The 62-year-old driver of the Honda was killed by the crash even though he was wearing his seat belt.The four injured included Spooner, who received minor injuries, and three of the students riding in the bus, police said.Spooner and two of the students were taken to Legacy Emanuel Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries while the third was taken by family to an unknown hospital with a minor injury, police said.Students who were not injured were taken to Warren School where parents were advised to pick up their children.
A detour was established around the scene and was to remain in effect until the highway was re-opened. It was closed for several hours.Oregon State Police troopers continued the investigation with two OSP crash reconstructionists to determine the cause of the crash.Commercial truck traffic caught in the backup was escorted through the scene after the incident was stabilized.
