TIGARD, Ore. -- The Tigard-Tualatin School District is warning parents about children who are getting high on caffeine at school and crashing when the high wears off.The issue of energy drinks has become so charged at Twality Middle School in Tigard that administrators asked parents not to allow their children to bring the drinks to school.Teachers at Twality sent a letter home to parents that said they're seeing their students get "drunk" on the energy drinks, and when it wears off they see them go on a caffeine crash.Teachers said some children are drinking as many as five cans per day.
Each one has about the same amount of caffeine as a strong cup of coffee.Administrators said that's worrisome, and the makers of Red Bull agree. The company said its energy drinks are not soda, and only people who are old enough to drink coffee should drink energy drinks.A Red Bull spokesperson said kids usually have enough energy that they just don't need the caffeine.
