Chase Ends With Crash Into Apartment

SALEM, Ore. -- A Marion County chase ended when the driver crashed into an apartment complex Monday, deputies said.A deputy tried to stop a man suspected of driving under the influence just after midnight.Deputies said Jose Meraz, of Keizer, refused to stop and led them on a 8.4 mile chase, beginning at Sunnyview Drive in Salem.
Meraz avoided several spike strips and headed back to his apartment complex in Keizer, deputies said.He crashed into an apartment at a slow rate of speed, damaging an interior wall of a bedroom. The crash produced enough force to move a child's bed several feet.A child who typically slept in the bedroom had been away for Mother's Day weekend.Meraz tried to run off after crashing, deputies said, but he was apprehended.They took Meraz into custody on charges of possession of cocaine, driving under the influence, reckless endangering, reckless driving and elude.
