Arsonist Sets Fire To Portland Dumpsters

UPDATED: 7:27 am PDT May 12, 2008

Portland authorities are seeking an arsonist who set fire to at least five dumpsters Saturday.

The fires were reported early Saturday morning on Salmon Street, Madison Street, Sixth Avenue and Seventh Avenue in southeast Portland.

Officials said the fires burned sides of buildings and blew out several windows.

A worker at one of the affected businesses said he isn't surprised by the crime.

"I live in this area and I know there's a fair amount of drunk kids and vandalism on Saturday night," said employee Sky Silga. "Usually on Saturday, our dumpster is full of cardboard so it'd be pretty attractive to anyone who wanted to burn a dumpster."

The damage totals about $5,000. Police are stepping up patrols in the area.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Portland Fire Bureau.
