PORTLAND, Ore. -- Sen. John McCain made his first visit to Oregon Monday to speak about global warming at a plant that builds the tools to harness wind energy. The senator addressed supporters at a company called Vestas that makes wind turbines. His next stop was a fundraiser dinner costing up to $33,100 per ticket. The senator from Arizona was welcomed at Vestas, where he chose to make a speech about what his administration would do about global warming.
Beginning with a bipartisan start as Democratic governor Kulongoski welcomed the Republican presidential candidate to Oregon. In this presidential primary battleground state, both are campaigning today on the need for renewable energy."The facts of global warming demand urgent action. Especially in Washington," McCain said. The audience at Vestas approved. Their livelihood depends on encouraging the use of new carbon-free technology.McCain said government and the marketplace can make that happen."The best way to achieve that is a system that sets clear limits on all greenhouse gases, while also allowing the sale of rights to excess emissions," McCain said. The so-called "cap and trade system" would create a commodity of value to those who operate more cleanly, McCain said. One of the Vestas workers, Jim Tyler, was glad to hear that even the conservative McCain is promoting the need to combat global warming."It's about time. We need to work together. I'm excited," Tyler said. The protesters outside the Sheraton hotel where McCain was holding a fundraiser had fewer kind things to say about the Republican. They said that McCain would create a "third Bush administration," and a 100-year commitment to keeping troops in Iraq.Monday evening inside the Sheraton Airport Hotel, McCain was holding a fundraiser where he would meet with supporters. Tickets were $1,000 for the reception, $10,000 for a photo opportunity and $33,100 for dinner.
