MOLALLA, Ore. -- Giving a hug means breaking the rules at an Oregon school, but 12-year-old Desha Eaves is trying to change the school's policy.Molalla River Middle School tightened its grip on students showing physical affection after students started showing up late to class. Principal Bob Espenel told the Molalla Pioneer newspaper, "You'd have groups of 10 to 15 kids and they all had to hug each other before they went to class."The school said the rule against public display of affection is designed to protect students from assault and from feeling uncomfortable.Students at the school said the hug ban goes too far.
"We're kids. I mean, come on, you need hugs," Eaves said."It's just something us kids do," said eighth-grader Elizabeth Lopez.Eaves sent a letter to the school board and she's working with her principal and school board to get rid of the policy. She said the principal has been impressed and receptive to the proposed change."I am helping with changing it a little bit and I'm hoping it works out," Eaves said.Phone calls to Principal Bob Espenel weren't returned by FOX 12's Monday night deadline. However, the Molalla Pioneer reported Espenel said he was not likely to lift the hugging ban.
