PORTLAND, Ore. -- A man who was the target of a FBI search warrant killed himself with a single shot to the head, police said Thursday. The FBI and Portland police officers were serving a search warrant in the 12600 block of Southeast Holgate Boulevard just before 6 a.m. While clearing an outbuilding on the property, officers encountered Derek Coady, 43, who they said was armed with a gun.Police tried to get Coady to put down the weapon, but he started to duck behind the front of a parked vehicle, according to officers. Police said the position would have given him a vantage point to possibly shoot at officers. An officer fired at least one round from his gun and a short time later, officers heard a gunshot from the area where Coady was hiding.
A Special Emergency Response Team was activated and they later found Coady dead from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head.I never in a million years would have imagined that our neighborhood would come to this. I'm speechless really," a neighbor named Christian said.Homicide detectives and the Multnomah County Major Crimes Team have started an investigation in the shooting. Investigators said they haven't figured out whether Coady was struck by a bullet or a bullet fragment fired by a Portland officer. An autopsy is expected to confirm the exact cause of death. The federal arrest and search warrant was one of a series served in the Portland metro area Thursday. Because of the nature of the investigation, a federal judge sealed most of the information in the case.
