UPDATED: 5:06 pm PDT May 16, 2008

A boat-filled trailer struck a woman and her son as it was backed into the Clackamas River on Thursday.

Carman Cruz, 27, from Sherwood, and her 2-year-old son were hit as the boat and trailer backed down the boat ramp at Clackamette Park in Oregon City at about 4:45 p.m, police said.

Oregon City Police Officer Doug Diller was patrolling the park when he heard yelling from the area of the boat ramp, police said.

As Diller came to the ramp, he saw Cruz under the boat trailer face down in the water, police said.

Diller held Cruz's head out of the water until she could be freed, police said.

Casey Akin from Oregon City witnessed the incident and pulled Cruz's son from the water, police said.

Both victims received non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to OHSU by ambulance, police said.
