VANCOUVER, Wash. -- Two masked men invaded a Vancouver apartment and shot a man during a robbery early Saturday morning.

Police said Gary Atkinson, 42, woke up to forceful knocks on his door at his Northeast 48th Street apartment.

When the man answered the door, two men tried to force their way in as the victim tried to keep them out. When the victim was overpowered, he tried to run into a neighboring apartment, police said.

Officers said the attackers shot at him, hitting him once in the back near his left shoulder. The two men then ran off before police arrived, authorities said.

Emergency crews took the victim to a hospital, where he was treated and released.

Police said Garry Alexander, 32, has been taken into custody in connection with the home invasion.

A search for a second suspect is ongoing.
