A worker at an assisted living center was arrested and charged with theft after she was caught on camera stealing from patients, police said.

Deputies arrested the woman at the Regency Park Assisted Living Center on Southwest Barnes Road.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office received multiple reports of thefts going on at the center, so with help from the assisted living center's directors, they set up a hidden camera to try and catch the thief, police said.

Police got permission from one of the residents to set up a hidden camera and plant a purse with money in it in order to catch the thief.

Three days after setting up the camera, Quanecka Thompson, 23, was caught on camera going through the purse, pulling out the wallet, taking money, putting it in her pocket and leaving the room, police said.

Detectives said they set up the purse a second time, and again, Thompson was witnessed stealing money from it.

Deputies arrested Thompson last week.

Thompson faces several charges including theft, burglary and criminal mistreatment.

Deputies booked her into the Washington County Jail. Her bail is set at $40,000.

Regency Park Assisted Living Center Director of Operations Dan Laney released the following statement:

"We were alerted to the possibility of a theft issue at Regency Park. We contacted the Washington County Sheriff immediately and began working with them to apprehend a suspect. With the cooperation of one of our residents, the Sheriff was able to obtain enough evidence to make an arrest. Regency Park will continue to cooperate fully with the judicial process to ensure the suspect is prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

"The safety and well being of our residents is our highest priority and concern. It is our practice and policy to conduct an employment background check and drug screening on all employees before they are hired, which includes a criminal history check. It is unfortunate that a person that is able to pass this screening process could be tempted at a later date to be dishonest when the opportunity is presented. We will continue to screen each every potential employee to ensure the staff at Regency park are not only extremely well trained, but also maintain the high standards and integrity we have as a company.

"As one of the first assisted living communities in Oregon, Regency Park has had a long history of providing exceptional care and service to our residents. We strive to be the premier provider of assisted living and memory care in the Portland market."
