Woman Says Sewage Spilled Into Apartment

Neighbors at a Portland apartment complex said they were forced to cope with a nasty sewage back-up this week.

Tina Lewis, who lives at Parkway Garden Apartments in northeast Portland, said it started Monday when a drain started to back up and spill raw sewage into her home. Toilet paper, urine and feces soon covered parts of her apartment, Lewis said.

City officials have posted signs throughout the apartment complex, warning people of the sewage spill. Most of the raw sewage was gone Thursday, but there was still a lingering stench in the area.

Casey Perkins, Lewis' next-door neighbor, was also dealing with the filth.

"I was bucketing feces for an hour-and-a-half," she said. "… Just to keep it out of our apartment."

Lewis said she spoke with the on-site apartment manager and called 911. She said apartment maintenance crews finally showed up Wednesday and started to clean up, but Lewis said that's not good enough.

"There's still raw sewage all over the walls, all over the toilet, in my tub, in my daughter's room," she said. "But they say it's safe for me and my children to return here today."

For two nights, the on-site apartment manager paid for Lewis and Perkins to stay at local motels. Lewis and Perkins were told they would have to check out Thursday.

The apartment manager could not be reached for comment by FOX 12's Thursday night deadline. The property owner was also unavailable.
