The former police chief of Sherwood sued the city for $1.5 million for wrongful discharge.

According to federal court papers, William Middleton is accusing the city of discriminating against him for his service in the Iraq war and the war on terror.

City leaders told him his service in the reserves was interfering with his work, according to the papers.

Middleton said he was harassed after he refused to accept either a demotion or retirement.

In September, the city accused him of misconduct and suspended him without pay for 30 days.
