Classmates Mourn Vancouver Boy

A 12-year-old boy from the Felida area died unexpectedly over the weekend, leading middle school students to mourn their friend Monday.

Cordel Tubbs, a sixth-grade student at Jefferson Middle School, died sometime between Saturday night and Sunday at 8 a.m., Clark County deputies said.

Family members told deputies that Tubbs had been in good spirits and good health when he went to bed Saturday night. When emergency crews responded to the home Sunday, they found him unresponsive in his bed and not breathing, deputies said.

There was no obvious cause of death and investigators from the Clark County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Team and the Children's Justice Center are investigating.

With two days left in the school year, Tubbs' classmates were supposed to be celebrating summer break, but instead they mourned the loss of a friend Monday.

"He was full of life; he had a really good personality," said Jessey Watters, a friend of Tubbs. "He wasn't really mean to anybody."

Friends said Tubbs had been known for his carefree attitude. They said he spent a lot of his free time skateboarding and playing video games.

"He's the kind of person who doesn't care what he looks like," said Gabriel Starks, another friend of Tubbs. "If people think he's fat or skinny or tall or ugly, he didn't care. He just liked having fun."

Detectives said there's no sign of foul play and no one is considered a suspect in Tubbs' death.

An autopsy showed no obvious sign of death and a medical examiner is conducting more testing. It could be weeks before they receive results.
