Disputed Doe Snowball Has New Home

Oregon's best-known doe has a new home. The female blacktail deer, known as "Snowball," that was rescued from the roadside six years ago by a Molalla family was moved Wednesday to a petting zoo.

The state seized Snowball and her offspring, Bucky, in September 2007 because Oregon law prohibits holding wild animals in captivity without a permit.

Now, Snowball has been transferred to Wildlife Safari in Winston, south of Roseburg. The doe will be placed in the children's petting zoo and can be seen starting Thursday at 11 a.m.

Snowball suffers from congenital and degenerative conditions, making her permanently disabled.

Wildlife Safari has a full-time, on-site veterinarian that will provide the long-term veterinary care she needs due to her deformities, zoo officials said.

"The doe will be in great hands at Wildlife Safari, in the care of people who understand her needs," said Peregrine Wolff, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife state veterinarian.

Meanwhile, the family that adopted Snowball has filed a lawsuit against the state.
