Police: Man Steals From Bank Using Sleight Of Hand

POSTED: 8:41 am PDT July 4, 2008
UPDATED: 9:03 am PDT July 4, 2008

A tricky thief made off with cash from a local bank without using a weapon or even making any threats, police said.

He didn't hold up the banks, but tried to get money by moving money around.

His strategy was to ask for large sums in $50 and $100 bills.

Police called the man a quick change theft suspect.

One teller, named Violet, said she thought she was helping a customer count money when he was actually ripping off the bank.

"He was completely friendly and, now that I think about it, too overly friendly," Violet said.

The man went into the Wells Fargo on Southeast Pacific Boulevard last week asking for change, police said.

He asked to exchange $1,700 in 50s into $1,700 in 100s.

While the teller tried to help him, the man took more money out of a shirt pocket and put other money into his pants pocket, police said.

He left without any money from the first bank.

But minutes later he went to the Wells Fargo branch in downtown Albany, police said.

This time he asked the teller to exchange $1,800 in 100 dollar bills for $1,800 in 50s, police said.

"You're not prepared because, like I said, you think everyone is going to do the right thing and it just happens," Violet said.

During the exchange, he was able to short the bank $700, police said.

"Oh my stomach just sank to the floor. (I) ran out and couldn't find him and (I was) just disappointed in myself," Violet said.

The teller said she's never been involved in any bank hold up or anything like this before.

"(It was a) learning experience that's for sure. It won't happen again, not like this," Violet said.

Cameras at her window captured several shots of the man.

She and police are hoping that someone can help identify him and that he's caught.

"I don't wish bad things upon him, but hopefully he will learn his lesson and it won't happen to anyone else like it happened to me," Violet said.

The man was described as Middle Eastern with an accent, in his 50s, about 5 feet 9 inches tall with a medium build, dark complexion and black thinning hair in a short ponytail.

He wore a gold watch with a black face and a ring on his right hand with multiple stones but one stone is missing.

If you see the man or know who he is call Albany police.
