Unattended Candle Starts Beaverton Fire

An unattended candle started a fire that caused $200,000 worth of damage in Beaverton late Saturday night.

Thirty firefighters responded to a home on Miles Court just before 11:30 p.m. Saturday. They fought and extinguished the fire from inside the home, officials said.

No one was injured in the fire, but a family who lived at the home has been displaced.

Based on evidence and information from the people who live there, investigators believe a candle started the fire.

Cassandra Ulven, a spokeswoman for Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue, said the fire served as reminder to never place candles near combustibles.

"It only takes minutes for a small fire to consume the contents of a room," Ulven said. "Fortunately, this family had working smoke alarms and they were able to escape unharmed."
