Distillery Becomes U.S.'s Second Absinthe Producer

A distillery in Oregon is the second in the nation to begin producing absinthe.

Southeast Portland's Integrity Spirits is the first distillery in the state to make the once-forbidden drink and the second in the nation only to a distillery in California.

The legislature legalized absinthe – also known as the green fairy -- in United States last year as long as it doesn't contain too much of a chemical that gave absinthe its toxicity and reputation for hallucination.

The makers said they've been having visions of the green fairy for years.

"(We've got) a passion for things that were, I guess, a little bit forbidden -- a little, I don't know what you would call it, but we really wanted to do something that nobody else had really done," distiller Kieran Sienkiewicz said.

Although Integrity Spirits' Trillium Absinthe won't cause you to hallucinate, it is 60 percent alcohol -- or 120 proof – so should be drank responsibly.
