PORTLAND, Ore. -- A cyclist and a driver faced off in the middle of a Southeast Portland intersection, and, now, the cyclist is facing charges of assault and DUII.Some witnesses jumped into the chaos and it was all caught on surveillance video. The cyclist and the driver were both heading northbound on Southeast 20th, but after the biker ran a red light, the driver pulled up next to him at a stop light and called him out on it.It turned out the motorist who yelled at the cyclist was himself a cycling advocate, trying to give a lecture on bike ethics. That comment started an all-out brawl that ended with the biker's arrest.Jerry Imholt and his crew at Honest One Auto Care said cyclists and drivers clash at that corner every day.“On occasion, people are trying to turn right here and bicyclists just cut in front of traffic,” Imholt said.It usually includes yelling and horn-honking, but Sunday night, the auto shop's security cameras captured something much more volatile.Around 10 p.m., Colin Yates was driving with his family and stopped at Southeast 20th and Belmont when 31-year-old Steven McAtee blew by him on a bike, running the light, police said.Up the street at the signal on 20th and Stark, Yates honked his horn and told McAtee he was making other cyclists look bad. That’s when the cyclist yelled back, challenged the driver to a fight and smashed his bike into the hood of his car.A crowd gathered and someone called 911.“Well, somebody hit somebody and now…," the caller said."They’re fighting?" the 911 operator asked."There’s no contact yet, they’re like, 'Let’s go, let’s do this thing.' And the guy already threw his bike at the guy’s car,” the caller said.

And he flipped him off and stuff like that,” cyclist John Garcia said. The relationship has suffered, too, after deadly accidents in which motorists turned right at intersections and crushed cyclists trying to go straight through the crossings. Young adults fond of riding children's bikes through Portland's posh West Hills at breakneck speeds have also caused consternation. When police arrived, witnesses were blaming the driver for possibly hitting the biker.Police spokesman Sgt. Brian Schmautz said a "pretty aggressive crowd" was standing around accusing the motorist of hitting the cyclist. One witness, who apparently feared the crowd would turn on him, told police he didn't want to be seen talking to them but later corroborated Yates' story.McAtee, a city employee, was charged with assault, criminal mischief, driving under the influence of intoxicants and disorderly conduct.Related:
