VANCOUVER, Wash. -- A man was released from a hospital and placed under arrest after a high-speed chase resulted in police shooting him nine times, officers said.Witnesses told police that Rocky Brown, of Vancouver, was drunk when he led multiple law enforcement vehicles on a wild ride that ended with officers opening fire on him, police said.Clark County deputies, Camas police and Washougal police were dispatched to a call just before 2 a.m. July 5.As a county deputy approached the 20700 block of Southeast Evergreen Highway, he received a report that a blue Ford Bronco with an open top and three people inside had left the area and were involved in the altercation, police said. The deputy spotted the Bronco and attempted to pull it over.
Despite repeated warnings over the patrol car's PA and the deputy's emergency lights flashing, Brown continued to drive, made an obscene hand gesture and refused to pull over, police said.As the deputy continued to follow, investigators said a woman who was a passenger in the Bronco climbed into the back and began to throw things at the patrol car that was following them.During the pursuit, the man in the front passenger seat called 911 on his cell phone and told the operator that he was trying to get Brown to stop and let him out, but when he asked him to stop Brown just turned up the radio, officers said.At 58th Street and 199th Avenue, Brown stopped and let the passengers out before speeding off, yelling to the pursuing police that they shouldn't follow him because he had a gun, officers said.Brown drove a little further on Northeast 58th before stopping in the road. The two deputies and one Camas officer tried to make a high-risk vehicle stop, but Brown floored it, peeling out and driving straight at the lead deputy, who was out of his car, police said. The deputy, fearing for his safety as the Bronco bore down on him, fired his gun at the vehicle and the other two police opened fire as well, officers said.Brown continued driving past the three without hitting the deputy and traveled back toward the spot where he had let his passengers out and where three Vancouver officers were waiting with the two in custody, police said. After hearing Brown's threat of having a weapon, hearing the gunfire and not seeing any patrol cars behind the Bronco, the police believed Brown had fired upon the other officers and so opened fire upon him as well, investigators said. When the shooting ended, the vehicle came to a stop and Brown crawled out of the Bronco and tried to crawl away from the police.Officers took him into custody and he was taken to Southwest Washington Medical Center, where he was treated for nine bullet wounds and released a few hours later.Brown was arrested July 10 and charged with two counts of first-degree assault.
