I-84 Reopens After Fast-Moving Fire

THE DALLES, Ore. -- A fast-moving grass fire led authorities to close a stretch of Interstate 84 on Wednesday. The fire started in the hills just northwest of The Dalles and spread rapidly because of the strong winds. It crossed old Highway 30 and Interstate 84. It burned unused property owned by the Port of The Dalles. Oregon State Police said the reduced visibility led authorities to divert westbound traffic at The Dalles and eastbound traffic at Hood River.
At 8:10 p.m., the Oregon Department of Transportation said two eastbound lanes and one westbound lane had reopened. The opening of the second westbound lane was expected soon.
