Police said they arrested a Tigard man after he led them on an extensive chase that ended when he ran out of gas.

A Tigard police officer spotted Gary Allen Smith, 27, from Tigard, speeding on his 2001 Suzuki SVC motorcycle a little before midnight Wednesday on Highway 217 near Tualatin, Oregon State Police Lieutenant Gregg Hastings said.

An OSP trooper joined the pursuit when Smith entered Interstate 5 southbound followed by a Tigard police car with its emergency lights on, police said.

Smith drove more than 130 mph and swerved through all four lanes as the officers pursued him, police said.

He continued to avoid the police as more officers joined the pursuit but finally stopped at milepost 233 and was arrested by an OSP trooper when he ran out of gas at 12:39 a.m. Thursday, Hastings said.

Smith was taken to Washington County Jail and charged with reckless driving and felony attempt to elude on a vehicle, police said.

Hastings said similar charges will be filed in Clackamas, Marion and Linn counties since Smith's attempted escape traveled through all those counties.
