Dump Truck Destroys Boat On Interstate 5

Fire Officials Say Situation Was Lucky

A dump truck wrecked a boat on a trailer after the driver was unable to stop while driving downhill, crashing into it.

No injuries were reported in the crash that happened at about 3 p.m. Friday and left the 18-foot fiberglass boat ruined. Fire crews said the situation could have been much worse.

"A second earlier, and the dump truck would have hit the pickup with five passengers," Jefferson Fire Chief Don Bemrose said. "This could have been an accident with several fatalities."

The truck was driving downhill on Viewcrest, and the driver wasn't able to make the turn onto Century Drive, fire officials said.

The truck crossed Century Drive, went through a guardrail and across both northbound lanes of Interstate 5 and crashed into the boat, officials said.

The family in the pickup pulling the boat, two adults and three children, were on their way back to Gresham after a week of camping in the Crater Lake area.
